TRAIN THE TRAINER

Flag rugby, built for your staff

We train your team to deliver the program — then support them all season long.

We design technical assistance around one principle: the best way to learn to run an activity is to do it.

In our professional development trainings, your staff experience the activities as participants first, throwing a rugby ball, running the drills, playing the games, before ever facilitating with kids. Utilizing resources from the Aspen Institute and the Search Institute of Minnesota, we guide your team toward becoming positive, effective coaches and mentors.

Two Ways to Get Started

Bring It to Your Program

Rugby LA partners directly with your organization or district to train your staff on-site.

Join an Upcoming Training Day

Can't wait for a dedicated season? Staff from any program can register individually for one of our hosted training days in LA, Orange, or Ventura County.

Either way, you're entering the same program — training, implementation support, and a season-ending tournament.

Three Phases. One Season.

Phase 01 — Training

We Train Your Staff

Group training for site staff, covering program implementation, positive youth development coaching practices, and a full curriculum walkthrough. The following week, a Rugby LA coach delivers Session 1 live at your site, a real-time demo so your trained staff see the model in action with their own students.

Phase 02 — Implementation

Your Staff Deliver the Program

Your trained staff independently deliver the eight-session Rugby LA curriculum. Rugby LA staff make on-site support visits during this period, providing real-time coaching and keeping quality high. Program staff stay available by phone, email, or text throughout the season.

Phase 03 — Tournament

All Schools. One Field.

Rugby LA returns to run a friendly intramural tournament bringing participating sites together. Every participant receives a jersey and medal, a community moment that builds belonging, pride, and momentum for next season.

What You Receive

Group staff training — hands-on, activity-based learning with minimal lecture, maximum practice

A live on-site demo the week following training

A full equipment kit (balls, flags, cones, pump) and digital curriculum, accessible from any device

Mid-season support visits from Rugby LA staff

An end-of-season tournament — jerseys and medals for every participant

Permanent access to the digital curriculum, so trained staff can run the program independently in future seasons

What You Learn

How to Play Flag Rugby — You don't need to be an athlete. Our training is designed so that anyone, regardless of sports background, leaves feeling confident enough to lead every activity in the curriculum.

How to Coach Flag Rugby — Real-time, practical implementation of our eight-session curriculum. You'll run every drill and game yourself before ever facilitating with kids.

Being an Effective, Positive Coach — How the positive youth development concepts you already use integrate naturally into every session of this program.

Aligning with PE and PYD Standards — How each session maps to recognized physical education and youth development frameworks.
